Movie Day

Days like today are what summer is all about for kids: fun and friends.

We joined some friends for the $1 movie special and I must say I believe I enjoyed the movie more than the kids! Mr. Peabody and Sherman was great! I loved all the jokes tied to history.  At the end I offered my kids bonus points if they could name the three biblical references mentioned! They only caught one!

The movie got me thinking, though, of all the unnecessary trouble they found.  Of course I understand it was only a cartoon, but all the bullying, the problems with the little girl and the unapproved time travel could all have been avoided with one decision!  If Mr. Peabody had only chosen to homeschool Sherman!

Obviously, this would not have been a stretch from what they were doing. Sherman was well educated by Mr. Peabody in ways the school could not have offered.  He had been schooled at home by his dad in the most natural way a cartoon possibly could: with a time machine! He was well socialized with a variety of age groups and cultures all across time. Seems to me all the work Mr. Peabody had already put into his education could have just continued!

Now obviously I say all of this in fun. There is very little I would change about this enjoyable movie of mishaps!!

I know this all seems silly but I have come to realize after homeschooling for only a year (yes, we are still newbies at this I realize) but it does make you look at the world around you in a completely different light. Everything becomes a question of “What can I teach my children through this?” Everything becomes a learning experience and can open up so many other opportunities. No matter what the day brings we can all learn from it, questions spark whole discussions which lead to reading and research. We all grow and learn and ultimately become closer to each other!

After the movie was lunch and some great history discussions, particularly about ol’ George Washington. The fun continued with time playing at a park we have never visited before (another bucket list item for the summer)! All in all a wonderful day! Finishing it off with art projects! So although we have already officially started our school year for 2014, with homeschool the fun never stops! There is always something new to explore and fun to do! I look forward to all the adventures and projects that this year will bring!!

Thank you Lord for the opportunities you have blessed us with to be able to be such a part of our children’s education. Thank you for the blessing of friends, of sunshine and of fun!

I Will Go With You Daddy

This morning has been a busy one: picking up rocks and picking out weeds.  Yes, a busy hot morning, but a morning spent together as a family.  All five of us out there, working together, as a family, taking care of our home.  Now, granted there were a couple of little boys who would have rather been inside doing anything else at all, but they were there, doing something. Then there was little bit, happily working alongside her daddy!

“This is fun!” I heard her tell him once.  “Fun? Well I don’t know about that,” he replied.  She was so proud of herself as she walked in step with him pulling weeds and taking them away from the flower beds.  Fun?  Not exactly what the adults were thinking. Bending and pulling, moving wagons of rocks, while sweat dripped into our eyes from the heat, nope, not quite our idea of a fun way to spend the morning.  Definitely as far from fun as possible as our sons were concerned.

Fun.  That is how our daughter described it, however.  Even as we finished for the day and she was told she could go on inside and clean up if she wanted, nope, she was having fun.  “I will go with you, daddy,”  she said the the sweetest grin in her little not quite four year old voice. That is what made it fun!  She was working alongside her dad.  Feeling so big and proud as she heard him praise her for her help.  Following in his footsteps it would not have mattered what we were doing this morning, it was fun because she was with him, her father, who she loves!

Oh that we had that same attitude.  Jesus gave instructions for us to become as little children, for us to be humble as they are humble (Matthew 18: 3-4).  When the apostles tried to send the children away, He called them back, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14.  And why not. Children love so completely, so innocently, they see the best and have no pride or hatred.  They trust completely.  Oh to follow my Father the way my daughter follows hers!  Such an example. So much joy in just being beside him, no matter the work.

May I remember this example, may I look to my children for inspiration and remember to love and trust and follow my Lord as a child. To be there so close, just to be in His presence.  No matter the circumstance, having “fun” just because of the One I am with, the One I belong to is the One who loves me beyond all reason.

030Thank you Lord for my children who are always teaching me more than I could ever teach them!!

New Year Excitement!

Wow, I can’t believe it is 2013 already!  2012 was gone too fast. However, I am very excited about what a new year brings, and for Faithfully Fun I hope it brings lots of new opportunities and many new creations!

One new item that was originally not going to be revealed until this year, but that several people received a sneak peek of around Christmas is the new Mommy/Nana necklaces!  They are so much fun to make and personalize!  Here is a small sample of some I finished around the holidays!

I really enjoy them and have loved the orders I have received so far. Being able to create something adorable and special for each mom and grandma!  The feedback from everyone has been so encouraging!

There are so many new items I hope to add to the line ups this year and I hope you will follow me on Facebook and Twitter so you are sure not to miss any of them!

May God bless you and yours in this new year.
